VALUE PROPOSITIONS

RESEARCH - IN SEARCH OF DISCOVERY
Local, national and international researchers will find support from PODS in their studies of marine and freshwater ecosystems in our region, highlighting research in preserving species-at-risk and ecological responses to climate change, including anthropogenic effects on biodiversity.

MONITORING - LONG-TERM TRENDS
Long-term monitoring programs will be established through PODS to better understand spatial and temporal variation in our myriad aquatic environments utilizing our lab facilities and equipment, and drawing upon our local expertise.  Universities, non-profits and other organizations will be encouraged to collaborate with us to establish a Northwestern network of monitoring stations using corresponding protocols and methodologies.

EDUCATION - HOPE FOR THE FUTURE PODS will provide the public with a variety of learning opportunities through engaging workshops, environmental stewardship courses, and hands-on biological studies.   Further, the educational programs will align with existing curricula, including outdoor recreation, fisheries management and marine sciences.

PROTECTION - CONSERVATION AND ENHANCEMENT
Preserving and enhancing long-term environmental health of the region by establishing a wide variety of conservation areas is central to the PODS mission. PODS will become a hub for sharing information and knowledge with decision-makers to inform economically viable land-use strategies.

ECONOMICS - THE VALUE OF NATURE
At PODS, the laboratories, conference centre, restaurant and underwater galleries will attract significant additional visitors to the Pender Harbour area, and bolster the year-round local economy. More tourists and increased employment opportunities will keep businesses viable throughout the winter months, and encourage families and young people to consider making Pender Harbour their permanent home.

CONNECTIONS - AWAKENING THE POWER OF NATURE
PODS will connect us with each other and with the living world around us. Stewardship activities, nature tours, arts programs and workshops and exploring how we can work together with nature towards a better future will be a central theme of PODS.

CONFLUENCE - ART AND SCIENCE AS ONE
Art can be an incredible tool in sharing complex information. At PODS, art and science will combine to create more diverse understandings of and connections with the natural world. We will provide performance, conference and exhibition spaces, as well as dynamic indoor and outdoor classrooms and meeting places.

CULTURE - HERITAGE AND HISTORY
PODS will foster meaningful connections with the shíshálh First Nation, showcase the archaeological significance of the region, and provide interpretive resources which reflect the importance of Pender Harbour to indigenous cultures. PODS will also feature historical records, stories and artifacts from the past century, with an emphasis on the extraordinary historical significance of Irvines Landing.
